Korean question words: who, what, where, when, why, how

VocabularybeginnerBy Campusmate Team · Updated Oct 3, 2026

Six question words that unlock most basic conversations.

Question words let you ask for information. In Korean they usually stay in the same place as the answer would be — you do not move them to the front.

  • 누구 — who
  • 뭐 / 무엇 — what (뭐 is the short, spoken form)
  • 어디 — where
  • 언제 — when
  • 왜 — why
  • 어떻게 — how

Examples (polite -요 style)

  • 이름이 뭐예요? — What is your name?
  • 어디에 가요? — Where are you going?
  • 언제 만나요? — When shall we meet?
  • 왜 한국어를 배워요? — Why are you learning Korean?
  • 이거 어떻게 해요? — How do I do this?

Ask these in the Ask Korea community and practise answering other learners.
